Hong Kong TENCEL™ Day: Advancing circularity for the future of textiles

On December 8, Lenzing proudly hosted Hong Kong TENCEL™ Day to address the theme of “Advancing Circularity”. The event aimed to highlight the importance of prioritizing responsible practices and ensuring the traceability of the supply chain to facilitate an industry-wide transition to a circular economy.

“Our commitment to creating the synergies that foster a transition towards sustainability and bringing systemic change to the textile industry is evident in the everyday work we do at Lenzing. This core belief inspired the ‘Advancing Circularity’ theme for this Hong Kong TENCEL™ Day, which strives to bring our valued network together to discuss the latest industry trends and topics. We would like to express our heartfelt appreciation for all those that attended,” said Rex Mok, Vice President of Fiber Technical Marketing and Development at Lenzing.

The event was supplemented by external guest speakers, including Dr. Gloria Lei Yao, Director of Project Development for The Hong Kong Research Institute of Textiles and Apparel (HKRITA), who spoke on the application of bio-based materials in sustainable sporty fashion. Dr. Yao gave an overview of the textile lifecycle, going into detail about eco-friendly functional fabrics, as well as the development and structural design of yarns and fabrics.

The sharing continued with Philippe Li, Sustainability Team Leader at The Mills Fabrica, who also delivered an inspiring presentation on accelerating textile innovations for sustainability, highlighting its importance in finding solutions to combat the socioenvironmental impacts caused by the textile and apparel industry.

Lenzing’s own Alan Hung, Senior Business Development Manager in Apparel, then delved deeper with a presentation on the topic of circularity in apparel. During the talk, Alan shared intriguing insights on global fiber market trends and environmental considerations related to the textile and apparel sectors.

Attendees also enjoyed a panel discussion hosted by Marianne Mclean-Atkins, Education Lead at Redress, an environmental NGO working to reduce waste in the fashion industry. The panel welcomed special guests Shadow Chan, CEO of Panther Group, David Tring, Denim Head at The Magic of Denim Consultancy, and Vincent Hu, Senior Commercial Director at Lenzing China, who all shared their goals for both the future developments needed along the supply chain, as well as new and potentially upcoming regulations that will impact the textiles and clothing industry.

Hong Kong TENCEL™ Day offers Lenzing and its partners a space to showcase methods for incorporating circularity into daily business operations through innovation and collaboration with other value chain partners in the industry, pushing forward progress for the efficient use of resources and enhancing supply chain traceability.
