British Vogue partners with TENCEL™ fibers to launch a biodegradable t-shirt

April 22nd 2022, London - Today, British Vogue bolsters its commitment to eco-conscious fashion in collaboration with inspiring environmentally responsible fiber brand TENCEL™ to reveal the new limited edition t-shirt; VOGUE x TENCEL™* that promotes sustainable design and celebrates TENCEL™’s 30th anniversary this year.

Made from TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers, a wood based and biodegradable fiber derived from sustainably sourced natural raw material wood, this innovative collaboration seamlessly blends the fashion heritage of Vogue with TENCEL™’s pioneering speciality fibers to create a collection of beautiful and responsible garments. From nature to fiber to fashion, TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers have been shown to be fully compostable and biodegradable under various conditions* and revert back to nature in 6-16 weeks.

The first ever Vogue X TENCEL™ biodegradable T-shirt* is embroidered with the iconic Vogue logo, manufactured using TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers**, allowing for a breathable fabric, offering a smooth drape and exquisite softness that is gentle on skin and comes in four colourways inspired by nature: Northern Droplet, Perfectly Pale, Grey Melange and Faded Khaki.

2022 marks 30 years of TENCEL™ fiber innovation. Through this journey the TENCEL™ brand has inspired companies and brands to adopt more eco-friendly practices with a commitment towards encouraging consumers to make informed purchases. From their botanic origin, to the low environmental impact of production, to the eventual biodegradability in various conditions*, TENCEL™ fibers achieve admirable levels of sustainability.***

From its inception, Vogue Collection has championed sustainability at every stage of the process, from the sourcing of materials to the production of designs. This collaboration between British Vogue and TENCEL™ marks an exciting first step into more sustainable products.

Emily Chan, Sustainability Editor, British Vogue;

“When thinking about our collective impact on the planet, we must also consider what we leave behind. Working in partnership with TENCEL™, we wanted to create a product that is sustainably made,while also containing fully biodegradable fibers. It has been an absolute privilege to collaborate with TENCEL™, a brand doing so much for the world of sustainable fashion and we are so excited to present these eco-minded T-shirts to shoppers keen to make a statement with our planet in mind.”

Harold Weghorst, Global Vice President of Marketing & Branding at Lenzing;

“In the year we celebrate our 30-year mile-stone, TENCEL™ 's collaboration with British Vogue represents leaders in both the fashion and textiles industries, joining forces to collectively push forward the need for industry wide shifts and deeper levels of transparency with a commitment to driving positive change, empowering brand partners and consumers on their journey to sustainability, whilst offering solutions though new standards of sustainable practices and responsible production processes.”

*The biodegradability of the t-shirt refers to raw white TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers which are used in the t-shirt production. The biodegradability and composability of TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers has been confirmed for soil, water, marine, home and industrial composting conditions.

**TENCEL™ Lyocell fibers have gained a commendable reputation for their environmentally responsible, closed loop production process, which transforms wood pulp into cellulosic fibers with high resource efficiency and low environmental impact. This solvent-spinning process recycles process water and reuses the solvent at a recovery rate of more than 99%. Consumers can have the assurance that their fashion choices are not contributing to an adverse impact on the environment.
